A trumpet sounded

This morning, I heard a rather noisy bird which I at first thought was a Hadeda Ibis, often polluting the sound waves, they are usually laughing at everything you do or so it seems.
Turned out to be a Trumpeter Hornbill which was making a cry that sounded like a baby crying through its nose. I unfortunately was unable to get a photo of it, but as it is a regular visitor to my house in Pennington, I'm sure I will get another chance soon enough. Here is a picture from another website in the meantime.

Rare and pretty...

The Narina Trogon lives in woodlands, and this is just where we found him... A truly beautiful bird. We were extremely happy to find him and if it weren't for Sonto who seems to be able to mimic the calls of every bird and animal in Ndumo, we would have walked right past him. Here's a better shot...

Long neck - Goliath Heron (corrected 22 Feb)

This is a Goliath Heron, as pointed out by my Dad. Lighting wasn't so forgiving, Below is the bigger picture, click it to make it bigger.

Hide and seek

We found a lot of birds when we went to Ndumo in the North coast of South Africa. This photo was taken by my Dad. It is a Southern Brown-throated weaver.
These birds are commonly found among reeds looking for building material to build their nests like the one pictured.
